The field behind my garden has significant run off

Reported via mobile in the Carriageway Flood NonHazard category anonymously at 18:21, Wed 25 October 2023

Sent to Island Roads 18 hours, 54 minutes later. Enquiry ref: 16253064.

The run off from the field is significant, both directly into my garden ditch which runs along the back of my property as well as on to the highway from the field entrance the highway floods. There are 2 gullies/ drains on the highway outside the entrance of the field , neither of them play any part in collecting the water run off from the field.. one is to far away from the entrance the other seems to be positioned to high and the water does not run into it … the outcome is that the highway becomes flooded and runs in to the ditch, which runs parallel to the highway, & subsequent overwhelms the ditch significantly contributing to the flooding of my garden ( and last night almost resulted in my property flooding) … the culvert which the ditch runs in to is draining but can not deal with the water from the ditch when the flood water from the highway is added. Last night i tried to divert the water running from the field onto the highway towards the gulley but my efforts were not enough to prevent the flooding that occurred.

Thank you Regards Mr P Kennedy

  • Good evening…. Tonight’s heavy rain has again caused massive flooding problems for our property… the run off from the field once again flooded the road ( Corve hill) & cascaded into the ditch and made significant contribution to overwhelming the ditch resulting in my garden completely flooding….. if I hadn’t installed air brick covers my house would have flooded …. The water on the highway reached my gate entrance & cascaded over on to my front drive …. a complete mess The photos are showing an attempt to divert the water from the field into the gulley / drain situation outside the entrance to the field . Thank you

  • Good morning … further rain today has one again completely flooded my garden with a significant contribution by the field run off on to the highway & subsequently cascading over in to the ditch… more photos attached demonstrate that the run off does not make contact with either of the road drains without temporary intervention as shown … this temporary’fix’ does not and can not contain the water … with on going bad weather forecast this issue needs some immediate attention to find, in the first instance, a more robust solution to ensure the run off drains where it should .

    Thank you Regards Paul K

  • After reading the comments from Island roads regarding land owners responsibilities in respect of water entering the highway from land IE in the case I’ve reported where significant/ overwhelming water is running from the field on to the highway and subsequently into the ditch where the ditch becomes unmanageable… can you please look to address this issue as quickly as possible… for the third night in a row I have been pumping water out of the ditch in order to protect my property. I would like to understand what action is going to be taken Thanks Kind regards Paul K
